The Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC)

The Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC) is the Independent Voice of Responsible Business and Trade across Asia and the Pacific and was established in 1967. Its secretariat has been based in Hong Kong since 2003. It was relocated from the East/West Centre in Hawaii by the former Chairman of HSBC and Chairman Emeritus David Eldon GBS, JP of PBEC at the time. The Chief Executive of Hong Kong, China Ms. Carrie Lam actually presided over our 50-year anniversary dinner as guest of honour in 2017.

Hong Kong joined APEC in 1991. As provided for in the Basic Law, Hong Kong continued to participate in APEC as a separate and full member after 1997 using the name "Hong Kong, China". HKC is represented by the Chief Executive and the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development at APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting and APEC Ministerial Meetings, respectively.
